Unit 5 - Empressarios and Causes of the Texas Revolution

Texas formally declared independence from Mexico in March of 1836, following the War of Independence that began the previous year. Why did Texas want independence from Mexico? There are many reasons.

Mexico were keenly aware of the possibility of Texas splitting off to become a U.S. state or an independent nation. In 1830, the Mexican government announced that no more settlers from the United States would be allowed. However, the move was too little, too late. All it did was anger those settlers already in Texas.

Effects: The Battle of San Jacinto was the event that caused Texas to gain its independence from Mexico.  Mexico's loss of Texas caused a great deal of friction with the United States. Mexico did not recognize Texan independence, and was outraged when Texas became a U.S. state in 1845. In 1846, war broke out between the two countries.

Is there anything in your life that you would be willing to fight to protect? What? Why?

There were many different types of settlers in Texas prior to independence from Mexico: Anglos, Tejanos, etc.

What events and actions by Mexico might prompt these settlers to fight for their property and way of life? (Taxes, new restrictive trade and immigration laws, conflicts over disputed land claims, etc.)
